Datolite

specimen number:
2102471

location:
Upper New Street Quarry, Paterson, New Jersey, USA

description:
Light green glassy gemmy crystals of datolite measuring to 1.0 cm in size on matrix. In good condition.

The Upper New Street Quarry, located in Paterson, New Jersey, is a historic trap-rock quarry that operated during the industrial development of the region, supplying crushed basalt for local construction and road paving. Geologically, the quarry exposes the early Jurassic Orange Mountain Basalt, formed during the breakup of the supercontinent Pangea. As the massive lava flows cooled and fractured, late-stage hydrothermal fluids circulated through the vesicles and joints, depositing a diverse suite of secondary minerals. The site is world-famous among mineral collectors for yielding fine specimens of zeolite group minerals, prehnite, pectolite, datolite, and associated quartz crystals.
