A large slightly pinkish polished datolite, this with very rich crystallized native copper throughout as inclusions. I think a very neat combination specimen.

The Lake Mine, located in Ontonagon County, Michigan, was one of the early copper mining ventures developed during the mid 19th century as part of the exploration of the western Keweenaw Peninsula. The mine worked native copper deposits associated with the region's volcanic rocks, particularly within amygdaloidal basalt flows and related formations of the Midcontinent Rift. Mining was carried out through shallow shafts and underground workings that followed irregular copper bearing zones. Like many smaller properties in the area, the Lake Mine experienced limited success due to the uneven distribution of copper and the challenges of early mining methods. Operations were relatively short lived, and the property was eventually abandoned as attention shifted to more productive mines.
