description: The Pinarcik deposit near Milas in Mugla, Turkey, located within the Ilbir Mountains, has a modern mining history beginning with discovery and state exploration in the late 1940s and 1950s. Systematic underground mining for aluminum ore (bauxite) was operated by the state corporation Etibank from 1972 until the mine was closed and abandoned in 1982. The area later reopened under private commercial operation in 2006 to recover gem-quality material. Geologically, the region is situated within the Menderes Massif, where hydrothermally altered fracture zones developed at the contact between Mesozoic gray marbles and brownish-black diasporic metabauxites. Within these veins and cavities, unique gem-grade diaspore crystals formed, frequently occurring as transparent prismatic individuals and distinct V-shaped contact twins prized for their alexandrite-like color-change properties.
