The rock quarrying operations in Black Rock, Lawrence County, Arkansas, which historically included facilities operated by companies such as Meridian Aggregates and later Martin Marietta, trace their industrial roots back to the late 19th century, with modern crushed stone production significantly expanding around 1954. The site remains active today. Geologically, the area is situated within the Salem and Springfield Plateaus of the Ozark region, where quarries extract high-purity Paleozoic limestone, dolomite, and sandstone from formations such as the Ordovician-aged Everton Formation and related units, providing essential raw materials for road construction, rail ballast, and concrete aggregates.
