The Ben Hogan quarry, located near Black Rock in Lawrence County, Arkansas, is a well-known regional mineral locality recognized for producing sharp crystals of pink dolomite, calcite, and minor chalcopyrite. Geologically, the deposit is hosted in early Paleozoic sedimentary dolostone and limestone sequences. Low-temperature, metal-bearing hydrothermal fluids migrating through regional fractures and solution cavities precipitated the vug-lining minerals, which typically consist of saddle-shaped dolomite crystals coated with small, iridescent chalcopyrite crystals. Commercial extraction at the open-pit site focused on industrial crushed stone production through the mid-twentieth century until the quarry eventually became inactive, allowing the pits to fill with water. Specimen harvesting by private collectors occurred intermittently during weekends and periods of inactivity, with access continuing until the property was sold and secured against entry in the mid-1990s.
