The Karibib district, located in the Erongo Region of central Namibia, is a storied mineral province situated within the Damara Orogenic Belt. Geologically, the area is characterized by a series of highly fractionated Lithium-Cesium-Tantalum (LCT) pegmatites that intruded into Neoproterozoic schists and marbles approximately 500 million years ago. These pegmatites, such as the famous Otjua and Usakos systems, contain hydrothermal pockets where elbaite tourmaline formed in a variety of colors, including vibrant greens, pinks, and the sought-after "multicolored" or "watermelon" habits. Historically, mining in the Karibib area began in the early 20th century, with significant interest developing during the German colonial period. While industrial-scale quarrying for lithium ores (lepidolite) and petalite peaked between the 1940s and 1960s, specimen mining for elbaite has remained a consistent activity for local small-scale miners and international collectors alike. Today, while some larger operations focus on dimensional stone and marble quarrying, the Karibib pegmatites continue to be a vital source of high-quality tourmaline specimens, cementing Namibia's reputation as a premier destination for African gem minerals.
