1713782
location:
Barra do Salinas, Minas Gerais, Brazil
description: Barra do Salinas, located in the northern reaches of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is a renowned gem-producing district within the Aracuai pegmatite province. Geologically, the area features highly evolved granitic pegmatites that formed during the Neoproterozoic to Cambrian period as a result of regional tectonic activity, creating volatile-rich fluid pockets ideal for rare mineral growth. Historically developed as an artisanal and commercial mining center through the latter decades of the twentieth century, the district became internationally famous for yielding exceptional gem elbaite. Elbaite itself is the lithium- and sodium-rich member of the tourmaline group, prized by collectors and gemologists for its complex trigonal prismatic crystals, remarkable transparency, and striking color variations ranging from vivid pinks and greens to multi-colored zoned specimens.
Attractive gem crystal of elbaite. In good condition.
