Elbaite with Quartz, Albite
specimen number:
1052206
location:
Grotta Dorri, San Piero in Campo, Campo nell'Elba, Livorno, Tuscany, Italy
description:
This classic specimen features a gemmy multicolored elbaite crystal (0.6 cm) on quartz and albite matrix from the historically renowned San Piero in Campo, Elba Island, Italy, and is in good condition with intact form; it gains significant collector value from its antique early 20th century handwritten label, attesting to its provenance from one of Europe's most celebrated pegmatite localities where spectacular tourmalines and other pegmatite minerals have been sought since the 19th century. San Piero in Campo pegmatitic veins and miarolitic cavities have long produced elongated, lustrous tourmaline crystals in an array of colors and are closely tied to the history of elbaite, the tourmaline species formally named after Elba, with neotype material recently described from the Rosina pegmatite in this area and classic finds often small but highly regarded in historic collections.
