The Kilosa district in the Morogoro Region of Tanzania is situated within the Neoproterozoic Mozambique Belt, a geological province characterized by high-grade metamorphic rocks such as granulites and gneisses. Geologically, this area features magnesium-rich environments where ultramafic rocks or silica-poor metamorphic conditions allow for the formation of large, gem-quality silicate minerals. The locality is particularly noted for producing exceptional specimens of enstatite, a pyroxene mineral that occurs here in a range of colors from brownish-green to a deep, saturated green, often possessing high transparency suitable for faceting. Historically, mining in the Kilosa area has been dominated by artisanal and small-scale miners rather than large industrial corporations, with activity surging intermittently since the 1970s and 1980s as new gemstone pockets were discovered. These mining operations involve the excavation of pits and shallow shafts into the weathered metamorphic host rock. Today, Kilosa remains a significant source for collectors seeking well-formed enstatite crystals and for the gemstone trade, contributing to Tanzania's reputation for diverse and high-quality pyroxene group minerals.
