The Mitchell Plateau, located in the Wyndham-East Kimberley Shire of Western Australia, is a remote and elevated landform shaped by ancient geological processes and extensive tropical weathering. Geologically, the plateau is capped by extensive bauxite deposits that formed through the intense lateritic weathering of underlying Proterozoic basalt flows belonging to the Carson Volcanics. Historically, the area gained modern economic prominence in the mid-1960s following the discovery of its massive bauxite reserves, though it remains widely celebrated today for its pristine wilderness, dramatic cascading waterfalls, and traditional Indigenous heritage. Epidote, a common sorosilicate mineral formed through low-grade regional metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration, occurs widely within the altered greenstone and volcanic assemblages of the broader Kimberley basement and localized regional fractures.
