Epidote with Quartz
specimen number:
2292317
location:
Green Monster Mtn., Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, USA
description: Lustrous deep green blocky crystals of epidote to 1.0 cm in size on matrix with crystallized quartz. All of the prominent crystals are in good condition. Green Monster Mountain, located on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska, is a contact metamorphic skarn deposit formed when Mesozoic granitic rocks intruded into Paleozoic limestone. This geological interaction created mineralized zones rich in calcium-silicate minerals, copper, and iron. Historically, the locality was prospected and mined for copper during the early twentieth century, but it later became a source of epidote crystals for collectors. The epidote grew within open cavities and pockets in the skarn, often alongside quartz and magnetite, making the mountain a recognized locality for this mineral.
