description: The Kipawa Alkaline Complex, located near Sheffield Lake in the Temiscamingue region of Quebec, Canada, is a highly complex geological structure belonging to the Grenville Province. Geologically, it consists of a syenitic and agpaitic rock complex that intruded into surrounding gneisses approximately 1 billion years ago, resulting in an environment exceptionally rich in rare-earth elements and unusual silicates. The complex is a world-class locality for eudialyte, a rare cyclosilicate mineral that occurs there as striking, translucent, raspberry-red to deep pink crystalline masses and grains embedded in a matrix of white feldspar and black amphibole. Historically, the area was first identified for its unique mineralogy in the late 1950s, with significant exploration and quarrying for mineral specimens and rare-metal potential intensifying throughout the 1970s and 1980s. While there have been several modern industrial projects aimed at developing the site for heavy rare-earth production between 2010 and 2026, it remains primarily known as a premier site for scientific research and specimen recovery.
