description: Ferrovanadium is a metallic ferroalloy primarily composed of iron and vanadium, typically containing between 35 and 85 percent vanadium by weight. Produced in industrial smelters through the reduction of vanadium oxides (such as vanadium pentoxide) using silicon or aluminum in electric arc furnaces, this product is tapped as a liquid and cooled into a silver-gray crystalline solid. Once solidified, the alloy is crushed into specific sized lumps or fine powder for industrial use. The primary purpose of this smelter product is as an additive in steelmaking, where it dramatically increases the tensile strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance of structural steels, high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels, and various tool steels.
