The Jalgaon district in northern Maharashtra, India, is situated on the Deccan Traps, a massive basaltic plateau formed by volcanic eruptions roughly 65 million years ago. As these thick lava flows cooled, escaping volcanic gases left hollow cavities, or vesicles, throughout the basalt rock. Over time, warm, mineral-rich groundwater filtered through these pockets, slowly depositing secondary minerals like apophyllite, stilbite, and chalcedony. Historically, Jalgaon has been an important agricultural region, but the development of commercial stone quarrying in the late twentieth century to supply basalt for infrastructure projects led to the discovery of these mineral-bearing cavities, establishing the area as a major source of volcanic mineral specimens.
