The Jalgaon district, located in the northern part of Maharashtra, India, is world-famous for its prolific production of zeolite and silicate mineral specimens. Geologically, the area is situated within the massive Deccan Traps, a large igneous province consisting of thick layers of basaltic lava flows deposited during the late Cretaceous period. As these volcanic rocks cooled, gas bubbles created vesicles that were later filled by secondary hydrothermal minerals, including colorless and gemmy fluorapophyllite, pristine white stilbite, heulandite, and delicate sprays of scolecite. Historically, these minerals are not typically extracted through dedicated industrial mines but are instead recovered as a byproduct of basalt quarrying for construction aggregate and road metal. The surge in mineral specimen exports from the region began in earnest in the 1970s and 1980s as the international collector market recognized the unique quality of the Jalgaon pockets. Today, numerous active quarries continue to operate throughout the district, with local workers carefully hand-extracting world-class mineral clusters that make Jalgaon a premier global locality for volcanic cavity minerals.
