Fluorite from the southern Illinois Fluorspar District is well known for producing excellent cleavage octahedrons due to the minerals perfect octahedral cleavage. When fluorite crystals are split along internal planes, they naturally break into smooth eight sided shapes. In areas such as Hardin and Pope counties, miners and collectors commonly created these cleavage pieces from larger fluorite crystals found in vein deposits in limestone. The resulting octahedrons often show colors such as purple, blue, yellow, or colorless and are valued for their sharp geometric form and clarity.
