Fluorite
specimen number:
2013312
location:
Auglaize Quarry, Junction, Ohio, USA
description:
Beautiful iridescent cubic crystals of fluorite covering most all sides of matrix. This is in good condition and very colorful. Minor calcite present. The iridescence seen on fluorite from Junction, Ohio is typically caused by a very thin surface film formed by natural oxidation or slight chemical alteration after exposure to air and groundwater. This microscopic film creates light interference effects, producing shifting rainbow colors on the crystal surfaces. The effect is superficial and does not represent a change in the internal color or composition of the fluorite itself.
