specimen number:
2013360

location:
Bluffton Stone Quarry, Allen Co., Ohio, USA

description:
Glassy gem light purple cubic crystals of fluorite measuring to 0.8 cm in size on matrix. This is in good condition and very choice for this locality and species. Collected in the early 1970s, if not earlier.

The Bluffton Quarry in Allen County, Ohio is a limestone quarry developed to produce crushed stone from Silurian age carbonate rock. Quarrying began in the 20th century and exposed cavities in the limestone that contain well formed crystals. Collectors have found minerals such as fluorite, calcite, and sphalerite in these pockets. Although primarily an industrial quarry, Bluffton became known among collectors for attractive fluorite specimens from northwestern Ohio.
