Fluorite

location:
Stoneco Lime City Quarry, Lime City, Wood Co., Ohio, USA
description: The Stoneco Lime City Quarry, located in Wood County, Ohio, is a significant industrial site famous for its aesthetic Midwestern minerals. Geologically, the quarry excavates the Silurian-aged Guelph Dolomite and Lockport Dolomite, which are part of a massive carbonate reef system. Within the vugs and fractures of these dolostones, hydrothermal fluids deposited a suite of minerals, most notably fluorite, celestine, and calcite. The fluorite found here is highly prized by collectors for its distinctive translucent to transparent cubes that often exhibit a pale brown, amber, or "root beer" color, frequently displaying attractive color zoning and fluorescent properties under ultraviolet light. Historically, the quarry has been an active source of crushed stone, lime, and construction aggregate for many decades, with significant mineral specimen recovery occurring from the mid-20th century through the present day. While primarily an industrial operation managed by Stoneco of Michigan, the site remains a classic reference locality for Ohio fluorite, with specimens distinguished by their high luster and association with white, bladed celestine or sharp dogtooth calcite crystals.
Gorgeous root beer colored glassy gemmy cubic crystals of fluorite measuring to 2.0 cm on edge set on matrix. In great condition with just slight micro-chipping present. From the 1980s. Incredibly fluorescent under longwave ultraviolet light.
Size: 5.5 x 5.0 x 3.5 cm (miniature)
