Fluorite

specimen number:
2072238

location:
Rogerley Mine, Weardale, England, UK

description:
Semi lustrous cubic green slightly translucent crystals of fluorite across the front of matrix. Minimal micro-damage and cleaving present, still in good condition. Brightly fluorescent. Classic stuff for this locality.

The Rogerley Mine, located within a disused limestone quarry near the village of Frosterley in Weardale, County Durham, is world-famous for its distinct emerald-green fluorite specimens. Geologically, the mine exploits the Great Limestone member of the Alston Block, where hydrothermal fluids circulating through the North Pennine Orefield deposited fluorite, galena, and quartz within dissolution cavities or "flats." The fluorite from this locality is renowned for its intense daylight fluorescence, changing from a deep forest green to a vivid blue-violet under natural UV light. Historically, the site began as a commercial limestone quarry in the 19th century, but specialized specimen mining did not commence until the late 1900s. From 1999 to 2016, the operation was managed by UK Mining Ventures, becoming the first mine in the United Kingdom operated exclusively for the recovery of mineral specimens rather than industrial ore. Today, while ownership has transitioned, the Rogerley remains a legendary name in contemporary mineralogy for its iconic green cubic fluorite clusters.
