The Walworth Quarry, located in Wayne County, New York, is a premier North American locality famous for its distinct pale gem-blue fluorite crystals. Geologically, the site is situated within the Silurian-aged Lockport Group, a dolostone formation characterized by numerous vugs and cavities created through the dissolution of fossils and evaporite minerals. These cavities provided the necessary space for the slow growth of highly transparent, light blue fluorite cubes, which are often found in aesthetic association with white dolomite, clear selenite, and occasionally celestine or sphalerite. Historically, the quarry has been an active source of crushed stone and aggregate for decades, operated for a significant period by Dolomite Products Company. While primarily an industrial site, the quarry became a sensation in the mineral collecting community during the late 20th century as specific "blue zones" were encountered by miners. Today, Walworth fluorite is highly prized for its exceptional clarity and delicate pastel color, which is virtually unique among New York mineral occurrences.
