Fluorite
specimen number:
2102272
location:
Lavrion, Attica, Greece
description: The Lavrion (or Laurium) mining district, located on the Attic peninsula of Greece, is one of the most historically significant mining centers in the world, famous for its silver-bearing galena. Geologically, the region features a complex series of marble and schist layers known as the Attic-Cycladic Massif, where polymetallic sulfide ores formed as carbonate replacement deposits and vein systems during the intrusion of Miocene-aged granodiorites. These deposits are particularly renowned for their secondary oxidation minerals, producing world-class specimens of smithsonite, adamite, and annabergite in a vast array of colors. Historically, the mines were the engine of the Athenian Empire, with intensive silver production peaking in the 5th century BC, providing the wealth used to build the Parthenon and fund the Athenian navy. After lying dormant for centuries, the district saw a major industrial revival in the mid-19th century, with operations by the Compagnie Francaise des Mines du Laurium and other firms continuing until 1982. Today, the area is a protected archaeological and mineralogical site, celebrated for its unique 3,000-year legacy of human labor and its status as one of the most mineralogically diverse localities on Earth.
Sharp lustrous slightly translucent cubic crystals of fluorite to 1.5 cm in size across the front of matrix. In good condition.
