Wuyi County, located in the central part of the Zhejiang Province, China, is famously known as the Fluorite Capital of China due to its massive reserves and historical production. Geologically, the region is characterized by extensive hydrothermal vein deposits hosted within Mesozoic volcanic and sedimentary rocks, which are part of the larger Southeast Coastal Igneous Province. These deposits were formed as fluorine-rich hydrothermal fluids filled faults and fractures, resulting in the crystallization of large, vibrant fluorite cubes often associated with quartz and calcite. Historically, mining in Wuyi began on a small scale in the early 20th century, with systematic industrial extraction accelerating after the 1950s to support Chinas growing steel and chemical industries. At its peak in the 1980s and 1990s, Wuyi was a global leader in fluorspar production, operating dozens of state-owned and private mines across the county. While many of the older, shallow mines have closed or shifted focus toward high-quality mineral specimen recovery, the district remains a critical geological landmark and a primary source for the world-renowned green and purple fluorites that define the region.
