Fluorite

specimen number:
8311322

location:
Ojuela Mine, Mapimi, Durango, Mexico

description:

Very attractive gemmy light purple and glassy crystallized grouping of fluorite coming off of a small amount of matrix. This is in super condition all around. Unusual and attractive.

The Ojuela Mine, located near Mapimi in the state of Durango, Mexico, is a world-famous mineral locality situated within the Sierra de Mapimi. Geologically, it is a carbonate replacement deposit (CRD) where hydrothermal fluids replaced Cretaceous-aged limestone with a complex suite of metal sulfides and oxides. The mine is particularly renowned for its oxidation zone, which has produced spectacular secondary minerals such as neon-yellow adamite, legrandite, and lush green smithsonite. Historically, the Spanish discovered the deposit in 1598, but its most productive era began in the late 1800s when the Penoles Company modernized the site. A notable feature of the mine's history is the Puente de Ojuela, a massive suspension bridge built in 1898 to transport ore across a deep canyon. While large-scale commercial silver, lead, and zinc mining slowed down in the mid-20th century, the mine remains active today through small-scale specimen mining, continuing to provide high-quality crystals to the global mineral market.
