Fluorite
specimen number:
8311415
location:
Yiwu, Jinhua, Zhejiang, China
description: Very attractive multi-generation crystallized fluorite specimen. First-generation large slightly translucent green to greenish purple octahedral crystals, a second-generation of smaller green octahedral crystals quite gemmy and attractive across the top. The crystals measure to almost 5.0 cm in size. In super condition. The Yiwu area, located in the central Zhejiang Province of China, is situated within a prolific metallogenic belt characterized by extensive Mesozoic volcanic and sedimentary activity. Geologically, the region features numerous hydrothermal vein deposits where fluorine-rich fluids migrated through fault systems and fractures in Jurassic-aged rhyolitic and tuffaceous rocks, leading to the precipitation of high-grade fluorite. The locality is well-known for producing fluorite in a diverse range of colors, including vibrant greens, deep purples, and occasionally colorless or yellow varieties, often forming as well-defined cubic or octahedral crystals. Historically, mining and quarrying for fluorite in the Yiwu district and surrounding counties began in the early to mid-20th century, with a significant increase in industrial production during the 1950s to support China's growing steel and chemical industries. While many of the smaller, older mines have reached the end of their operational lifespan, the region remains a major center for the processing and trade of industrial-grade fluorspar. As of 2026, Yiwu continues to be recognized both as a global hub for small commodities and as a historic locality for aesthetic fluorite specimens that are highly regarded by the international mineralogical community.
