The Yaogangxian Mine, located in the Yizhang County of Hunan Province, China, is a world-class tungsten-tin-fluorite deposit situated within the Nanling Range. Geologically, it is a complex hydrothermal vein system associated with a late Jurassic granitic intrusion, where mineralization occurs in both the granite and the surrounding Devonian-aged sedimentary rocks. The mine is famous for producing exceptional fluorite specimens, often characterized by sharp, transparent to translucent cubic crystals in shades of purple, blue, or green, frequently found in association with lustrous wolframite, quartz, and muscovite. Historically, mining and quarrying at Yaogangxian began as early as 1914 following the discovery of tungsten, which led to the establishment of the first state-run tungsten mine in China. Large-scale industrial production has expanded significantly over the past century, transitioning through various administrative phases to modernize the extraction of tungsten, tin, and bismuth concentrates. As of 2026, Yaogangxian remains a major active producer and continues to be one of the most prolific sources of high-quality, aesthetic mineral specimens in the global market.
