The Rogerley Mine, situated in a mid-19th century limestone quarry near Frosterley in County Durham, England, originally operated for industrial limestone extraction during the Industrial Revolution. Its modern phase as a dedicated mineral specimen mine began in the early 1970s (around 1972) when local collectors discovered mineralized veins. After intermittent weekend operations through the decades, the site was rehabilitated and transitioned to commercial mechanized specimen mining in May 1999 under new operators, remaining an active, ongoing seasonal producer. Geologically, the deposit is part of the historic Weardale orefield, where hydrothermal mineralisation fills fractures and cavity systems within Carboniferous limestone strata. The mine is world-renowned for its brilliant green fluorite crystals, which frequently feature an unusual natural daylight fluorescence driven by trace rare-earth elements.
