The Jaimina Mine is located in the Caravia-Berbes fluorite district within the Asturias region of northern Spain. Geologically, the deposit is a classic example of a Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) mineral system, where low-temperature hydrothermal fluids circulated through Permo-Triassic sedimentary rocks and older Carboniferous limestones. The mineralization is primarily hosted in limestone breccias and paleokarst structures, occurring as large veins and pocket-filled cavities. Historically, the mine was a significant industrial producer of fluorspar for the steel and chemical industries during the mid-to-late 20th century. However, it is most famous among mineralogists for producing some of the most iconic fluorite specimens in Europe. The fluorite from Jaimina is characterized by its deep, intense violet to nearly black color, often appearing in sharp cubic crystals that frequently exhibit a distinct "stepped" or "mosaic" growth pattern on the crystal faces. These cubes are often found in aesthetic association with white barite blades or sparkling quartz crystals, providing a striking visual contrast. Although industrial operations have largely ceased, the locality remains a legendary site for collectors seeking these high-quality, saturated purple fluorite specimens.
