description: The Annabel Lee Mine, located in Hardin County, Illinois, was operated by the Ozark-Mahoning Company and stood as the final active underground fluorspar mine in the historic Illinois-Kentucky mining district before closing in 1995 due to foreign market competition. Geologically, the mine was situated within the Cave-in-Rock subdistrict and targeted bedded replacement deposits of fluorite, sphalerite, and galena. These economic mineral deposits formed via hydrothermal solutions moving along major fault trends and replacing specific, chemically favorable Mississippian limestone strata.
Golden yellow lustrous mostly gemmy crystals of cubic fluorite measuring to 4.0 cm on edge in a cluster with chalcopyrite. This is in really good condition. The specimen shows very good translucency and is quite attractive when backlit.
