Geologically, the quarry excavates the Silurian-aged Lockport Group, specifically the Gasport and Goat Island Members, which consist of dolostone containing numerous vugs and cavities. These cavities formed through the dissolution of fossils and coral heads, which were later lined with minerals precipitated from low-temperature hydrothermal fluids. Historically, the site has been an active limestone and dolostone aggregate quarry since the mid-20th century. While industrial operations for crushed stone began in the 1950s and continue today under companies like Dolomite Products Co., the quarry gained significant fame among the mineralogical community during the 1960s and 1970s. It remains a legendary New York locality, though access for specimen recovery is strictly controlled due to active mining safety regulations.
