Coldstones Quarry, situated near Greenhow in North Yorkshire, England, is an active industrial site with roots tracing back to around 1800. Long before formal limestone extraction began, the high moorland terrain around Coldstones Hill was heavily worked for lead, barytes, and agricultural lime. Early operations were small-scale and manual, but output expanded significantly during the 20th century to supply materials for major infrastructure projects, including regional road networks and wartime airfields. Geologically, the quarry targets a prominent 13-meter-thick band of the Hardraw Scar Limestone, belonging to the Alston Group, which was laid down under tropical seas approximately 330 million years ago.
