specimen number:
1052398

location:
Stolberg, Sudharz, Mansfeld-Sudharz, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany

description:
An attractive grouping of almost colorless and mostly gemmy lustrous cubic fluorite crystals measuring to 6.0 cm on edge without matrix. These are lightly dusted with reddish hematite. This is in very good condition as seen. Just slight micro-damage present. Previously from the collection of Wilhelm Hoyer dating this to the 19th century. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video. Brightly fluorescent under longwave ultraviolet light.

The Stolberg mining district in the Harz Mountains of Germany has a long history of mining dating back to the Middle Ages, with activity focused on silver, lead, and copper from hydrothermal veins. Mining expanded through the 16th to 19th centuries with extensive underground workings. In addition to ore minerals, the district produced well crystallized fluorite from vein deposits, often occurring as cubic crystals with colors ranging from purple to green.

Wilhelm Hoyer was a 19th century German mineral collector and dealer who was active during a period when systematic mineral collecting and scientific study were expanding across Europe. He handled and distributed mineral specimens from important mining regions such as the Harz Mountains and the Erzgebirge of Saxony.
