The R.A. Kosnar Prospect Number 2, situated near Lake George in Park County, Colorado, is a specialized mineral specimen locality celebrated for its exceptional pocket-grown pegmatite minerals. Geologically, the site is positioned within the western flank of the Pikes Peak batholith, where late-stage, volatile-rich granitic magmas cooled slowly to form complex miarolitic pegmatites. These open cavities provided the perfect geochemical environment for the unhindered growth of highly prized, euhedral crystals, most notably deep blue-green amazonite microcline feldspar, rich smoky quartz, and well-crystallized albite matrix specimens. The history of this specific claim is tied directly to localized, low-impact field exploration by independent prospectors rather than industrial scale mining. Named for the prominent Colorado mineral dealer and collector Richard A. Kosnar, who intensively worked multiple claims around Yucca Hill and the Steven's Ranch area, the prospect was worked primarily during seasonal surface digs from the mid-1970s through the 1980s, producing some of the most vibrant, iconic color combinations of amazonite and smoky quartz known from the district.
