The Milpo Mine, located in the Atacocha District of the Pasco Province in central Peru, is situated within the prolific Cerro de Pasco mineral belt. Geologically, it is a complex skarn and hydrothermal replacement deposit where Cretaceous carbonate rocks were intruded by Tertiary dacitic and rhyolitic porphyries, resulting in extensive lead-zinc-silver-copper mineralization. The locality is highly regarded by collectors for its exceptional gemmy green fluorite, which often occurs as transparent, vibrant mint-green to deep emerald-green crystals in cubic or octahedral habits, frequently found on a matrix of white quartz or sulfide minerals. Historically, mining and quarrying at Milpo began on a significant industrial scale in 1949 under the Compania Minera Milpo S.A.A., which operated the site for decades before it was merged with the adjacent Atacocha mine following an acquisition by Nexa Resources. As of 2026, the Milpo-Atacocha complex remains one of Peru's most important underground mining operations, consistently producing high volumes of base metals alongside world-class mineral specimens for the international market.
