Rossport, located on the north shore of Lake Superior in the Thunder Bay District of Ontario, was founded as McKay's Harbour during the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway and was officially named Rossport in 1882 after railway manager John Ross. While never a dedicated mining town, it transitioned after the railway's completion in 1885 into a thriving commercial fishing and shipping hub that remains active today rather than closed. Geologically, the area is defined by ancient Precambrian basement rocks of the Canadian Shield, overlain locally by Proterozoic sedimentary sequences of the Sibley Group—such as the regional Rossport Formation red siltstones—and punctuated by younger intrusive diabase sills and fault-controlled hydrothermal veins associated with the 1.1 billion-year-old Midcontinent Rift system.
