Fluorite with Quartz, Hubnerite

specimen number:
1052561

location:
Pasto Bueno, Pampas, Pallasca, Ancash, Peru

description:
Attractive large combination piece with light green translucent crystal groupings of fluorite measuring to 3.0 cm in size scattered throughout this large cluster of quartz crystals with minor hubnerite. This is in good condition throughout with minimal damage present.

The Pasto Bueno mining district, located in the Pallasca Province of Ancash, Peru, is a world-class producer of tungsten and base metals known for its spectacular mineral specimens. Geologically, it is a hydrothermal vein system associated with the Consuzo quartz monzonite stock, which intruded into the Jurassic-aged Chicama Formation shales and Cretaceous sandstones. The mineralization occurred in several stages, primarily depositing wolframite, hubnerite, and tetrahedrite within quartz veins, often accompanied by vibrant green fluorite and distinctively bladed crystals of rhodochrosite. Historically, mining in the region has been active since the early 20th century, with the most significant industrial operations beginning in the 1940s and continuing, with various periods of modernization and ownership changes, through the present day. Pasto Bueno is particularly famous among collectors for its sharp, well-formed crystals of hubnerite and large, transparent fluorite cubes that exhibit a characteristic deep green to purple zoning. The district remains a critical source of tungsten for the global market while simultaneously providing some of the most sought-after mineralogical specimens from the Peruvian Andes.
