Crystallized fluorite is extremely rare from this mining district. Here is a very good example with purple gemmy crystals to 0.8 cm in size across a crystallized quartz and pyrite matrix. In good condition. The species was so uncommon and sought after in the mining district, I can remember being offered several lots within Romania during the 1990s, these actually been Spanish fluorite that they were trying to pass off as Romanian. At exceptionally high prices as well.

Cavnic, located in Maramures County in northwestern Romania, has a rich mining history spanning several centuries, with early extraction activities dating back centuries. Modern industrial-scale operations at the Cavnic mine officially opened in 1958, focusing heavily on the extraction of polymetallic ores. Geologically, the area is situated within the volcanic and tectonic belt of the Gutai Mountains, featuring complex hydrothermal vein systems hosted in Neogene volcanic rocks. These veins are renowned for producing vast reserves of lead, zinc, copper, gold, and silver, alongside world-class crystallized mineral specimens including quartz, carbonates, and sulfides.
