description: The Elmwood Mine, located in Smith County, Tennessee, is a world-famous Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) zinc deposit. Discovered in 1969 and opened for commercial mining in 1975, the site has been a major zinc producer, primarily extracting sphalerite. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within the brecciated Mascot Dolomite of the Lower Ordovician Knox Group. Dissolution of the carbonate rock created extensive cavern networks and collapse breccias, which hydrothermal fluids later mineralized. This process deposited rich ore alongside the spectacular, well-formed crystals of golden calcite, purple fluorite, barite, and sphalerite that make Elmwood legendary among mineral collectors.
Attractive lustrous gemmy light purple crystals of fluorite measuring to 2.2 cm on edge coming off of a crystallized sphalerite matrix with dolomite and quartz. In good condition.
