Franzinite is a rare silicate mineral belonging to the cancrinite group and is typically found in alkaline igneous environments such as nepheline syenites. It commonly occurs as white to colorless crystalline aggregates or prismatic crystals, often associated with other unusual minerals formed in sodium rich conditions. The mineral was first described from Mont Saint Hilaire in Quebec, Canada, a locality well known for its exceptional diversity of rare species. Franzinite forms in late stage mineralization within cavities and veins where highly evolved fluids allow for the development of complex silicate minerals.
