Freibergite with Galena, Pyrite, Quartz, Calcite

specimen number:
1052619

location:
Freiberg, Saxony, Germany

description:

Clusters of metallic freibergite crystals measuring to 0.8 cm in size across the top of a crystallized quartz matrix with galena. Very choice example for this rare mineral. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video. This label gives an original acquisition date in 1908.

Freiberg, located in the Erzgebirge region of Saxony, Germany, is one of the most historically significant mining centers in the world and serves as the type locality for the mineral freibergite. Geologically, the district is situated within a massive gneiss dome intersected by hundreds of hydrothermal polymetallic veins deposited during the Variscan orogeny. Freibergite, a silver-rich member of the tetrahedrite group, occurs here as dark grey to black metallic crystals within these veins, often associated with other silver sulfosalts, quartz, and siderite. Historically, mining and quarrying activities began in 1168 following the discovery of silver, leading to the establishment of the renowned Freiberg Mining Academy in 1765. The mines, including famous works like the Himmelfahrt Fundgrube, operated for over eight centuries, with silver production peaking in the 16th century and continuing until the late 19th century, followed by a shift toward lead and zinc extraction. While industrial-scale mining officially ceased in 1969, the city remains a global hub for mineralogy and geological education. Today, the Freiberg district is preserved as a cornerstone of the UNESCO World Heritage Erzgebirge/Krusnohori Mining Region, maintaining its status as a vital site for scientific study through 2026.
