description: The Picher Field in northeastern Oklahoma was part of the Tri State Mining District, which also included parts of Kansas and Missouri. Mining in the Picher area began in the early 20th century and focused on lead and zinc ores found in limestone and dolomite. Large underground mines produced sphalerite and galena that supplied metal for industry. The district became one of the most important lead and zinc producing regions in the United States before mining declined during the mid 20th century.
Semi lustrous sharp cubic crystals of galena measuring to 2.7 cm in size across the front of a chert matrix. This is in very good condition. This would have been collected in the 1960s, if not earlier.
