Semi lustrous cube octahedral crystals of galena measuring to 1.0 cm in size covering the top of matrix. Pyrite is present as well. This is in good condition. A very fine historical example, the specimen comes with an antique label that dates this to the very early 20th century.

Bytom, historically known by its German name Beuthen, is located in the Upper Silesian Industrial Region of southern Poland and sits atop one of the world's most significant lead-zinc-silver districts. Geologically, the area is characterized by Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) deposits hosted within the Middle Triassic Muschelkalk limestone and dolomite, specifically the Ore-Bearing Dolomite (OBD) sequence. These massive sulfide bodies formed through the circulation of low-temperature hydrothermal fluids that replaced the carbonate host rocks with galena, sphalerite, and marcasite approximately 200 million years ago. Historically, mining in Beuthen dates back to the 12th century, making it one of the oldest mining centers in Europe. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, under German administration, the city became a powerhouse of the industrial revolution, with massive operations like the Bleischarley (Szarlej) and Fiedlersgluck mines producing vast quantities of zinc and lead. For mineralogists, Bytom is the type locality for the "schalenblende" texture, an aesthetic, concentric banding of sphalerite and wurzite. While large-scale metal mining has largely concluded, leaving behind a landscape of historic industrial architecture and deep shafts, the geological legacy of Bytom remains a cornerstone of European economic geology and a primary source for studying Triassic-hosted carbonate mineralization.
