Brilliant lustrous modified crystals of galena measuring to 3.0 cm on edge aesthetic across the front of a chert matrix. In super condition, this is outstanding for this Midwestern classic. This was likely collected in the 1960s if not earlier. At one time this was part of the collection of St. Louiscollector-dealer Ralph Heitman.

The Picher Field in northeastern Oklahoma was part of the Tri State Mining District, which also included parts of Kansas and Missouri. Mining in the Picher area began in the early 20th century and focused on lead and zinc ores found in limestone and dolomite. Large underground mines produced sphalerite and galena that supplied metal for industry. The district became one of the most important lead and zinc producing regions in the United States before mining declined during the mid 20th century.

It is likely that this is from the Acme Mine.
