Small historic silver-lead prospects and test pits, such as the Holyoke Mine and related workings north of Ishpeming and near the Dead River basin in Marquette County, Michigan, date primarily to the 1860s before closing quickly due to low commercial viability. Geologically, these occurrences consist of narrow hydrothermal quartz-carbonate veins cutting through Precambrian metamorphic and igneous basement rocks, formed when mineralizing fluids filled small faults and shear zones. Mineralogically, the deposits are characterized by modest concentrations of lead and zinc sulfides, including galena and sphalerite, accompanied by minor amounts of silver, chalcopyrite, and gold.
