Brilliant lustrous cubic crystal of galena, this showing octahedral modified corners, set on a small amount of breccia matrix with dolomite and pyrite. On the backside of the piece the pyrite are forming casts after now gone anhydrite crystals. In great condition.

The Sweetwater Mine in Reynolds County, Missouri, is part of the Viburnum Trend, a major lead mining district discovered in the 1950s and developed in the 1960s. The mine exploits Mississippi Valley type deposits hosted in Cambrian dolomite, with galena as the primary ore mineral along with sphalerite and other sulfides. Operated by the Doe Run Company, Sweetwater has been one of the important producers of lead in the United States. The mine represents modern large scale underground mining in southeastern Missouri and remains a key part of the regions mining industry.
