location:
Brushy Creek Mine, Viburnum Trend, Reynolds Co., Missouri, USA
description: A large composite bright lustrous cubic crystal of galena measuring 9.5 cm on edge set on matrix with several smaller galena crystals and scalenohedral crystals of colorless calcite measuring to 4.0 cm in size. Some of the calcite crystals show cleaving. This still in really good condition, especially considering the overall size and weight of this piece. Small crystals of chalcopyrite are scattered throughout. cabinet display piece from this famous locality. The Brushy Creek Mine, situated near Greeley in Reynolds County, Missouri, is a significant deep-level operation located in the central portion of the prolific Viburnum Trend. Geologically, it is a classic Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) deposit where ore minerals like galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite replaced portions of the Cambrian-aged Bonneterre Dolomite along ancient reef structures. The mine is highly esteemed in the mineralogical community for producing exceptional specimens of iridescent chalcopyrite, lustrous galena, and various habits of calcite, including distinct twin crystals. Historically, the project was developed by St. Joe Minerals Corporation, with the shaft being sunk in the late 1960s and commercial production officially beginning in 1973. The mine was later integrated into the Doe Run Company's operations and has remained a consistent producer of lead and zinc concentrates for over fifty years. Throughout its operational history, Brushy Creek has been recognized not only for its industrial output but also for the high quality and variety of the crystalline minerals recovered from its underground workings.
