Crystallized galena extremely rich across the top of a cluster of white bladed barite crystals, this with minor chalcopyrite and native copper. The galena on the specimen is said to be argentiforous. In great condition, really neat for this old famous mining district. The specimen comes with a previous data card as shown at the end of the video, this with a date on it of 1953.

The Aspen mining district, situated in the rugged Elk Mountains of Pitkin County, Colorado, United States, was one of the most productive and technically advanced silver-mining centers of the late nineteenth century. Geologically, this world-class district is located on the edge of the Sawatch Range uplift, where complex structural faulting and hydrothermal activity created massive replacement ore bodies and veins localized along the contact zone between the Mississippian-age Leadville Limestone and the Pennsylvanian-age Belden Formation shale. These extensive, high-grade deposits yielded spectacular quantities of native silver, argentiferous galena, sphalerite, and secondary silver minerals within a dominant barite and dolomite gangue matrix, producing globally renowned, wire-like and leaf-like silver specimens. Historically, the district was first prospected in 1879 by a small party including Charles H. Bennett, leading to a massive silver rush that established legendary corporate mines like the Mollie Gibson, the Smuggler, and the Compromise. Underground extraction boomed exponentially through the 1880s, turning Aspen into a thriving cultural hub powered by pioneering electrical mining innovations and leading to the extraction of the famous 1840-pound Smuggler nugget in 1894. However, the catastrophic economic collapse caused by the Sherman Silver Purchase Act repeal in 1893 severely crippled the local economy, and while deep pumping operations and corporate consolidations allowed intermittent mining to continue through World War I, all major commercial silver mining extraction permanently ceased by the early 1950s.
