Galena with Pyrite
specimen number:

location:
Black Cloud Mine, Leadville, Colorado, USA
description: The Black Cloud Mine near Leadville in Lake County, Colorado, is part of the famous Leadville mining district that has been worked since the late 1800s for lead, zinc, and silver. Modern mining at Black Cloud developed in the mid 20th century with underground operations targeting carbonate hosted replacement deposits. The mine became an important producer of lead and zinc ores and was operated with modern methods into the late 20th century. Like other mines in the district, it also produced well known mineral specimens from its oxidized and sulfide zones, contributing to the long mining history of Leadville.
Semi lustrous sharp crystals of galena measuring to 1.3 cm on edge across the top of this matrix with crystals of pyrite. Some cleaving present as seen, still overall in good condition. Nice for this classic Colorado locality.
