The Septemvri mine, located within the Madan ore field in the Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, is a major base metal deposit known for producing galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite specimens. Geologically, the deposit belongs to a series of Tertiary-aged lead-zinc skarn and hydrothermal vein systems hosted within Precambrian gneiss, amphibolite, and marble sequences. Mineralization was driven by regional metamorphic and magmatic activity, where hydrothermal fluids replaced marble layers to form extensive metasomatic skarn bodies containing coarse-grained sulfides along with quartz and calcite. Commercial underground mining operations at the site began during the post-World War II industrialization era under the state-owned enterprise Gorubso, with intensive production launching in the 1950s. Following the political transitions of the late twentieth century, the mining complex underwent privatization in 1999, and the underground workings have continued to operate for industrial zinc and lead extraction while simultaneously producing mineral specimens into the twenty-first century.
