The Madan ore field, situated within the Central Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, is a highly significant underground mining district exploited for its massive lead and zinc resources. Geologically, the deposits consist of high-temperature hydrothermal replacement bodies and fault-controlled vein systems hosted within Precambrian metamorphic rocks, primarily gneisses and amphibolites, that are cut by Tertiary fault networks. Hydrothermal fluids originating from deep-seated magmatic activity migrated through these fault zones, precipitating dense sulfide mineral aggregates composed of galena and sphalerite within quartz, carbonate, and johannsenite skarn matrices. Industrial-scale extraction in the district began in 1953 under the joint Soviet-Bulgarian enterprise Gorubso, which established an extensive network of underground mines, shafts, and processing plants across the region. Following privatization in 1999, commercial operations have continued through recent years under corporate entities like Gorubso-Madan, which maintain active production from remaining underground orebodies.
